Banner of the Month (previously a weekly idea)

This was originally going to be a post in the Site Tweaking thread as someone suggested randomizing the various banners, but I figured this'd be a better place to post it.

I've been thinkin' about how neat it'd be to do something like "Banner of the week" where the fans could submit their own version of the banner (maybe PM 'em to PorpoiseMuffins or a mod in case he's busy), and then every week or so Porp could do something like randomly pick one from a folder and let that be the one that's up for a whole week.

It could be a fun community thing, and it'd sure be easier than having everyone do this...

I'm torn about this. On one hand, I would love to submit a banner and see if mine would be selected. On the other, I would have to carefully remove the tape from my monitor...

I think having a weekly contest might too often considering the number of members we have, but I still think this is an excellent idea. Perhaps we could do it monthly? Or have contests for Holiday-related banners? Just adding some of my own thoughts for consideration.

Maybe there could be a DA Group thing devoted to SMS banners. I've never looked at any DA groups so I don't know how they work, but I'm guessing that'd be a solid way to organize 'em. I just wonder what's easiest for Porp and the mods.

Which reminds me, I shoulda' said this in the beginning but here it is. The art style of the banner could be anything the creator wants. If someone wants to make it look 8-bit, cartoony, edited SatAM screengrabs, abstract designy-type, CG, ASCII characters, anime, pretty much anything then they should do it. Whatever the vision is, go for it and make it happen.

One thing I feel should be a requirement is that when someone makes a banner, they should put their username at the lower right or left hand corner as a signature so everyone will know whose it is.

Hey that's a cool one man! One thing I'm a little concerned about though is the size since it's 6 pixels taller than the current banner (which is 830x154), and I'm just wondering if banners of your size would be cropped or if there's no limit to the size. I'm sure Porpoise could explain a size limit (if any), so I hope he reads this.

It can be a little bit taller or shorter than 160px, it just has to be 830px wide.

I'm all for 8-bit, ASCII, and all that, but I don't think tracing should be allowed, if purely for the fact that any old schmuck can trace a picture and it's lazy. I guess using screenshots for the background would be alright, as long as they're from the show, but effort should be put into it.

...Maybe even using sprites would be alright for those who can't draw.

Can I object? dA is full of immature idiots and setting anything related to SatAM up there would probably just invite stupid kids flaming on the comments pages.

Surely there must be an alternative image hosting source if something like that is required, otherwise I don't see the point in branching out when everyone could just keep to themselves over here and not invite trouble.

It's also home to some of the best Sonic artists in the universe (SatAM included). The point isn't using it for image hosting, it would be to gather more interest and get more entries.
