Forty-odd years after the hype, what do you gaffers think of the technical quality of punK rocK muSIC? Is it simply a gang of apes bashing the same three chords over and over, or does it have air of, mm, craft or... dare I say... arT, to iT? Thusly, is there skill involved in playing this muSIC, or is it's rebellious attitude, and youthful exuberance meant to make up for the lack of competence involved?

Mike Patton got hooked on Stalling's music when he was still a child, "drinking far too much coffee and watching far too many cartoons." Whether or not it was entirely wise for the Patton parents to give the pre-pubescent Mike coffee and sit him down, buzzing away on the caffeine, in front of the telly while Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote blew each other to smithereens and pummelled each other with steel anvils, it certainly had a formative impact.

Well, I guess that explains the entire self-titled Mr. Bungle album, huh gang? LOL!

Kind of interesting, eh? Especially considering the band's (admittedly brief and early,) death metal roots. Considering they were such huge fans of Slayer (Mike Patton famously said, "I don't trust anyone who doesn't like Slayer,") you'd think they'd be anti-religion, huh? But as a good Catholic boy, it does my heart good to know tracks like this and Desert Search for Techno Allah (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzR5sTrYtwY) were intended to explore issues of faith and not just say "f*** God!" like the band's thrash heroes.

Being a punk fan, I naturally assumed Mike Patton's new hardcore band referred to hardcore punk. But Terry Spruance just said it was a hardcore band, not specifically a hardcore punk band. The term, therefore, could also be referring to hardcore hip-hop or hardcore techno, both genres that Patton is no stranger to. I say, do you suppose our friend Mike Patton is going to be playing hip-hop, punk, or techno music in this, his latest musical excursion? Or perhaps maybe... just maybe... it will be a Bungle-esque bastardization of all three at once? We can only hope.

But then again, I guess we already have Mindless Self Indulgence for that, right? But then again (er, again...) I stopped listening to Mindless Self Indulgence because when I discovered Bungle, I realized they were what I always wanted MSI to be, and they actually had real technical chops with singing, songwriting and playing music to boot. Bravo Mister Bungle!

In fact, the self-titled Mr. Bungle album is the album I've been searching for since I first discovered the British ska group Madness as a teenager, and learned there were whole other genres out there in addition to my mom's new wave and rock, and my dad's classical and jazz.

It's amazing to me that following that amazing debut, they also did a great avant-garde album and a great pop album. I'm sure some fans of the first album were disappointed that Bungle didn't just give us more of the same, but to me the self-titled album is the perfect album in that vein of music. They couldn't do any better, all they could do is repeat themselves. So instead they did equally well at making two other albums that went in a totally different direction. It brings a tear to my wistfully glistening eye to think we may never see their like again...

I find it obnoxious when people use the phrase ''that's adorable,'' to put down someone else's opinion, even when said opinion is also stupid or wrong in my eyes.

Character development is considered important in fiction, but people in real life rarely seem to develop at all.
