    ARCHIE SONIC IS TOAST

    Postby SegaShinobi27 on March 26th, 2017, 9:56 am

Sega is letting Sonic comics go it seems, for better or worse. The constant legal battles caused the rules getting more and more strict. Now even the back issues and compilations are flat out cancelled. Archie and SatAM are officially over. It's really freaking sad. :(

It's a shame. I used to be a loyal subscriber from 1996 to early 2000, then moved on to other things at the time.

We have to admit it had a good run. Anything that isn't a superhero comic in America generally doesn't last long, and Archie was able to keep their Sonic the Hedgehog comic series going for over 20 years. Quite a feat.

What's left? Sure the new Sonic games are coming out, but what about fans of the stories from the comics? The only show on Cartoon Network for Sonic is Sonic Boom. Sure there's Netflix for SatAM, but what is there for kids on basic cable? Teen Titans GO replaced Teen Titans, PPG 2016 replaced The Powerpuff Girls... It's like heroes can't be heroes anymore. Everything has to be casual in a slice of life setting, with jokes and memes that toned down what made the originals so great. I'm tired of it. I had to go out the other day and buy Nick shows from the 90s on dvd just to remind myself that cartoons can still be great, no matter the setting or tone. It's these network execs, man. They suck at coming up with kids shows. Sega is letting archie Sonic go, but we still have Sonic Boom episodes being pumped out? No justice.

Times change and nothing good can last. I'm impressed that Sonic's Archie comics run has lasted for as long as it did but after so many upheavals and reboots, it was bound to approach its end of life sooner or later.

Last year I became a stepfather to a seven year-old and suddenly I find myself paying more attention to the state of children's shows as I wind up watching quite a few of them with him. It makes me realise that Sonic Boom and the current aesthetic and direction of the Sonic franchise as a whole, fits in very snugly with the current trends in kids' entertainment. Most of them are either Flash or CG animation, with a very Pixar/Dreamworks kind of vibe, not just in the animation but also the dialogue, very whimsical but in a modern meme culture-esque way, as opposed to the madcap humour of the 90s a la AoStH. My understanding is that reception of modern-day Sonic is generally good among audiences.

Sega have been spending the past two decades continually attempting to reinvent Sonic for the modern age, and despite major issues with that in the 00s, their most recent attempts have been largely successful apparently. The heady days of following the triumphs and foibles of the Freedom Fighters and friends will always have a special place in my heart but I really can't blame the rest of the world for moving on without a second thought.

    RIP Archie Sonic.

for SEGA reinventing it, I can point the first flaw on their strategy, since the Dreamcast he talked, but the games never had any localization effort (either, or English or Japanese) when any random 3D zombie Shooter is decently voiced to Spanish/French or other languages it shows a lack of effort.

    I moved on from cartoons.

I used to be a big fan of Darkwing Duck, Talespin, Swat Kats: The Radical Squadron and Batman: The Animated Series. Thought they were some of the best cartoons out there.

Then a year or two ago when I finally was able to watch a few episodes off of Youtube, I realized that these cartoons didn't age as well as I thought they would. This is probably the same for most of us in our late 20s to late 30s. The dialogue wasn't that good and I found myself cringing at several moments. A few people can still watch these well into middle age, but I found out that I simply can't enjoy these cartoons all that much anymore.

After being exposed and having watched most of Mad Men, the Sopranos, Breaking Bad and I Robot, it's difficult to go back to the cartoons geared for kids.

I guess it's sad that kids today can't look at these cartoons the way we did, but as Neon said, nothing good lasts forever.

I tried watched Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog a few months ago, and it was just awful. As a little kid I loved this show. but over 23 - 24 years later, I can't watch it. It definitely didn't age well.

I'm still waiting for a Sonic game to drop on the Playstation 4, or on Steam. Already played through most of the games on PS3, and while they're okay they're not quite as good as the Sega Genesis games.

Really? because they were still well written, they just had stuff in it for kids too. And people complain that they're too dark.... look at the dumb crap kids have to watch these days. Sonic Boom, PPG reboot, and Teen Titans GO. all lazy shows with no story that drag down those characters who used to be heroes. I'm sorry. the 90s still DESTROY today's cartoons. Beast Wars is another good series that had just as much effort put into it as satam. don't give me that "you only liked it as a kid" crap.

I'm not one for giving up at the shake of a stick, and I'm sure you people aren't, either. That is why I want you to come with me and sign my petition, if you may. I too had a special connection with this show, and letting it just fade to nonexistence isn't something I would let it do so easily, out of respect and care for it. Check out here when you have the chance, please. https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/project-all-freedom

I believe Archie Comics wanted to focus on there own Archie characters and that is why the comic is no more. They decided to re-brand their own company and focus on Riverdale and Archie, they only wanted Marvel are part of the re-branding and not Sega.

So, I am banning anything that is published by Archie Comics that comes out in 2017 and beyond. I did not like that way that treated Sega and they took away my child's chance to get new issues of the Sonic The Hedgehog comic that they published before 2017. My child is only a year old and now I can't give my son/daughter new issues of the comic when my son/daughter becomes a teenager. This comic was a part of my teenage years and now I can't give my child new issues for his/her teenage years.

That is my feeling about Archie Comics now that they turned on Sega. Screw THEM!

I, for one, am glad this happened.

It's like this. I'm an outsider when it comes to the Sonic fandom. I played the Genesis games as a kid, but beyond SatAM, I have zero interest in the franchise as an adult. And honestly, I would rather just let the Freedom Fighters go, respectfully. I don't want them in the IDW comics because I've seen how they're treated, partly by their so-called fans (don't get me started on them) but also in the Archie comics. With regards to the latter, (particularly post-reboot) I view the Archie comics as a cautionary tale about getting what you want; in this case, more SatAM. I'm not going to go off on a tangent bashing the comic's writers. But suffice to say, I found that in the comics, SatAM's premise, world, and characters had to be changed so drastically, that they became unrecognizable. Therefore, my position is as follows: if one must change everything that made SatAM appealing to me in the first place, just so it can "live on", then I'd rather let it die.

Now, I'd love it if someone made the SatAM movie or comic that I'd want to see. But realistically, I know that's never going to happen. Times have changed; the world's moved on. And in the current media landscape, I don't want a watered-down, unrecognizable reinvention of SatAM. I don't want to pretend a new comic series, show, or even fan material contains the same characters I once loved, just because they share the same names or similar designs. Because internally, they'd be nothing alike. So, as far as I'm concerned, the current generation can have Sonic, and I'll move on to other things. I'll always have a soft spot for Sal and the gang, but SatAM is just one story I've loved. There are thousands more out there for me to discover, which I'll probably love just as much, if not more!
