The myth that the Chaos Emeralds aren't Emeralds

You've probably heard of the myth that has been circulating around the internet that the Chaos Emeralds are not, in fact, emeralds, because emeralds are cut differently from how the Chaos Emeralds are, and thus they should be called the Chaos Diamonds.

Any geologist should be rolling their eyes, here; the cut of a gem doesn't indicate the actual makeup of the gem. A diamond's chemical structure is pure carbon, whereas beryl (which is what Emeralds are) have the chemical structure Be3Al2Si6O18. The fact that the current emeralds are cut like a diamond means nothing, nor do the various colors of the Chaos Emeralds indicate anything but what impurities they contain; the green one is outright an emerald, the blue one can be considered an aquamarine, while the white one is pure beryl, but since they all are part of the same chemical structure, they are all technically the same gem, just with different impurities in them giving them their color.

So yeah, the Chaos Emeralds ARE emeralds by definition, and if anyone tells you otherwise purely because of how they're cut, tell them to talk to a gemologist or jeweler.
