And for good measure, here's an image of Sally from the 1991 Sega promo comic:

That's not really Sally. Their names are Ricky (that's the squirrel's name), Pocky (the rabbit), and Klucky (the chicken). That's according to SoJ. As for SoA, the animals depicted in the games have no names (poor little things . . . I mean animals =P )

I think you missed the entire topic. Sega of America/Europe gave the tiny animals names.

Ever feel that when these characters were first released, SEGA wanted to test them out to see if they were going to be in future references? Or am I just mistaken?

I have no clue on that.

I'm wondering that, since she actually did appear in this kind of comics & video games some time before SatAM, that they didn't give her the video game debut?

I was surprised when I first saw this tread with this new proof that Sal came before Amy.

"No, to get away from Colonel Sanders."

I remember an old Gamepro magazine advertisment for Sonic CD where they referred to "the pink hedgehog" as Princess Sally. I have to search around for that.

Didn't SoA originally call Amy "Princess Sally" as a means of keeping continuity? I vaguely recall reading somewhere that they did, but fan outcry resulted in her being named 'Amy' instead.

EDIT: Wait, if you look at the manual for Sonic CD on the Gems collection, they do, in fact, refer to Amy as 'Princess Sally'.

Yeah, I've heard that Sega was trying to use names American fans would be familiar with or something like that but that Amy was always the name in Japan. Can't say for Europe though....

The name Sally Acorn makes sense since her original design here is some sort of chipmunk. Why would you call her Amy? Amy is a hedgehog now. If you called a chipmunk by a hedgehog's name, Amy fans would be confused. The only time i remember Sega of America changing Amy to Sally was for Sonic CD's manual, where they replaced the original story with one based around Archie or SatAM. After that though she was known as Rosie the Rascal and Amy Rose. I feel like this should be common knowledge. :p
