Sally in Sonic 1! (Work in Progress)

Okay I have a near complete version of ROM working for people to try out, there are still a few graphical glitches (eg. the odd garbled sprite, pallette problems) but it at least has the basic Sally sprites working. Enjoy:

    Newest Revision:
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/4hh6ob

    Earlier Revisions:
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/r2hkpj
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/4755hp
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/l3xwhc

The newest revision has a new moves set: press A to perform kick attack and B or C to jump.

Special thanx to the guys at Sonic Retro (especially Aquaslash, Hayate and qiuu) for helping me program this ('help' being an understatement).

If anyone can help out with any of the aforementioned problems it would be greatly appreciated.

I must say, your sprites are adorable. I love the one where Sally's yelping with her arms up in the air after she's hit by an enemy.

and when she stands still, she plays with NICOLE

Also, I took the liberty in making a little promo video to help get your project exposed.

I gotta give this a try. I was looking for proof to show the fans that Sally CAN & WILL work in a Sonic game (as long as they do it right).

    Yay, I'm getting endorsement.

Thanx for the comments everyone, glad you like it. You can also thank the guys at the Sonic Retro IRC chat (Aquaslash and iojnekns to name a couple), who basically carried me through the whole thing.

By the way I've now updated the first post with a link to a second revision with slight tweeks (replacing 'SONIC' font with 'SALLY', fixed Sally's idle animation), still a few graphical glitches to clear up though.

I think Kega Fusion 3.51 works for windows 7. I'll check on it.

EDIT: It does, some problems involved, but overall it works great.
I'm ready and waiting for you.

I got K Fusion & yeah there are a few problems (the star posts just look like glitchy parts) but overall it's a blast to see proof that Sally can work as a game character.

This should be shown as evidence that the SatAM characters can be used in a game like this. All we need to do is have one of the Tech members at Retro to implement multiple characters and we have a winner.

    Someone rang? =P

I followed the link in the note to here. Some very nice work Psi! i see you found it already but yeah, Obj#A (title card) is gonna be in the main sonic.asm file.

Amywho, it looks like you need to relocate the signpost in VRAM. Also, I figured that the "jerkiness" of the running animation was intentional. It doesn't look too bad when you have the speed shoes, though I would change it to the smoother one regardless. It just fits in better.

Good work though! I love how the title screen animation turned out.

The glitched up star post (as well as the score points after destroying a badnik) accure anyway as a result of trying to expand the memory of the ROM dissassembly, it was either them or Sal. Something to work on fixing really.

By the way does anyone know if there's any problems with the good ending sprites? I tried fixing them but I'm not sure they're cleaned up.

    Yay welcome to the party.

Hmm, yeah I'll need to fix up the starpost and the bonus points from the badniks. Any suggestions?

The jerkier running I thought look better, Sally doesn't seem right with some of Sonic's moves and style so I tried making her movement more 'organic'.

I'd actually like to implement her own sort of move list that suits her better though I think I'll need a lot more experience with hacking programs to work that out.

Anyway, thanx for helping out with the whole thing.

If you look through the Spin Dash guide on the Wiki, it goes over moving the Sign Post's VRAM location, since it gets overwritten by the Spin Dash dust. You could just apply that portion. The same would apply to the Points Numbers as well, though I can't think of another location for them at the moment.

As far as a move list is concerned, you could use the hover board ability which she was going to have in Sonic Mars. It functions the exact same as Tails's flying. (which is why I've pegged Sally as a Flight type ever since).

EDIT: Also no problem. I'm glad to be able to help!
