For me it's the same problem with ultra realistic CGI cartoons, like the new Alvin and the Chipmunks. The more you bring a cartoon into the real world, the more you notice what's WRONG with it, and it stops being a simplified symbol of something cute or innocent, and just becomes a deformed creature. There's also the hollowness of it all, just an empty grin, but nothing going on behind it's eyes or in it's head. Just endlessly, soullessy grinning.

Yep, but the DisneyWorld's costumed critters looks ok, Mickey still looks like Mickey and so on... But a fair share of 3D Sonic memoralia look like the lovechild of Sloth from "the goonies" and a Muppet.

Better I'l say "Ill conceived 3D memorallia based on a 2D show tend to look weird"

i actually have a qestion Sonikku, i noticed some weird things: an AoStH Robotnik in the same frame as Sally(who as far as i know might've only have a cameo inthe christmas special)which ithink was the pajamas, Knuckles in it alot(especially weird with the one where it shows a shot of a SatAM Tails that i recognize, along with a Knuckles of almost the same animation style), and some other third things

now i've only heard of Knuckles being in the 3rd, never-will-be-made season of SatAM in what Ben *takes off hat* disclosed as his plan for it, so my question is: did i miss something or am i jumping to the wrong conclusion(which may be easy to guess)? :sonichuh: :rotorconfused:

For whatever reason, Sega World used different models from different sources for each character. Some of the US children's books look similar. If Sonikku has any more information about why they did that, I'd be interested to know too.

My theory about Robotnik's design is that SatAM Robotnik would be too scary for kids, so that's why his design was avoided for merchandise. SegaWorld probably wanted to use something more fun and lighthearted, so they actually embraced AOSTH more than SatAM. They probably added Sally because they felt that they needed a female character to appeal to girls. Good for marketing, and all that.

Sega World had four "primary mascots" and 2 "secondary mascots". Sonic, Tails, Robotnik, and Sally were the primaries. The most popular were clearly Sonic and Sally, and Sega World created new artwork and poses for them. Usually, the characters were depicted in groups because Sega World liked to promote all characters equally. You'll see these 4 a lot more than any other character. The designs were likely from the Sonic the Hedgehog Official Stylebook and Character Manual, a guide used by Sega to make sure character art remained consistent for licensed products. These scans of the stylebook show Robotnik and Tails' most common poses.
    ImageImage

This stylebook was probably the source for Sonic and Knuckles' art as well, but there are no scans that can prove it. Sonic's arms were sometimes colored blue by mistake, especially if it's art created just for the park. This error affected some merchandise and even the Sonic mascot costume that was there. Sally's artwork would have had to have been from a SatAM model sheet.

Now, the two "secondary mascots" were Knuckles and Bug. When the park was created, Knuckles only had game appearances, so he appeared less often than the big four. Still, if another Sonic character was need to round out a piece of artwork or merchandise, Knuckles was there. His artwork was probably from the stylebook mentioned earlier, but the pose chosen by Sega World was also used heavily for Sonic Underground, which premiered a year after the opening of the park.

There was also a really ugly statue of him outside. It looks like he's either holding his breath, or he's been stung by bees!

For those of you who aren't familiar with Bug, he was the protagonist of a somewhat obscure Sega Saturn game that was released around the time of Sega World's opening.

    Image

He really only appeared on the website artwork, but lots of Bug-themed merchandise was sold in the gift shop as well.

And those are the origins of the mascot characters.

Reminds me of the saying "like a bulldog chewing a wasp". He's certainly chewing something unpleasant!

I feel like now I can turn on the soundtrack from 8mm or something while watching Alvin and the Chipmunks and then somehow s*** myself out of terror. I've never thought of CGI this way... animation is totally ruined for me now.

    You mean like this?

I'm sorry... Here, I have more Sally-related Sega World pictures to show you. These came from John Kahler. You'll need to follow the links to see some of them, because I keep getting the annoying "Your images may only be up to 650 pixels wide" error when I try to post. Even though I'm pretty sure all of my images are smaller than that. Oh well.

It looks like the Darling Harbour monorail was temporarily decorated with Sonic -themed decals. I can see Sonic, Robotnik, Tails, and Knuckles on that train, so Sally's probably on the other side. Imagine, a Sally Acorn monorail! Now you can't say Sally was never popular...

... Let me just tell you, Sega Worlds Sally wasn't the easiest to wear. You cant really tell in the image on here but it is an extremely fitted suit that had no give. I can not tell you how many times her zip ha to be fixed.

In saying that I was prone to choosing to be Robotnik over the rest.

Do any of you have/ have you heard the CD we used to dance to? Sally sings on it.

    xx

Wait you are you saying actually worked in SEGA World as part of the show?
    That's Amazing!
There's still stuff that isn't known or hasn't been saved about that old park.

Oh and yes I've heard the CD recording of the stageshow but I've heard apparently there are different versions of the show with different songs, one with puppets.
Yet only one version of the show is known to be recorded.

If you can remember, is THIS one of the songs you used to dance to?

By the way some of the merchandise from that park, like the Sally stuff is really valuable today.
