Story-writing commissions - Please Read Again!

    Postby Velvet D'Coolette on January 19th, 2012, 5:09 am

I am open for story-writing commissions because for the foreseeable future I'm going to have 2 1/2 days per week free. If you would like a story written about your character then PM me.

    Specialties/Limits
•Character-driven/development (am equally at home with witty/bitchy characters, sensible ones, etc.)
    •Drama
    •Cute and fuzzy
    •Angst
    •Young adult
•Again, PM me if you have any other requirements - I may just not have put your favourite genre down!

    Other Peoples' Reviews
"I think you do an excellent job of really showing their personalities through their speech."
"The opening two paragraphs are great. Slow-paced yet atmopsheric, a great way to just let the reader slip into the scene. There's a kind of...gentle calm about them."
"Aww, the ending's so sad. I like how you showed [him] as he dutifully followed his mother's orders... You showcase well... I like that you really take time in showing [his] progression as a character in order to explore... I think it's realistic."
"Aww… what a lovely ending! Honestly, if it wasn’t for some of the black humor, this piece would have almost read like a children’s story. I feel like your writing style for this piece was very bright, the sort that elicited silly grins from me throughout the whole piece. Wonderful work!"

    Rates
    •1,000 words: $3.75 or £2.50
    •2,000 words: $7.50 or £5.00
    •8,000 words: $28.50 or £18.50
    •10,000 words: $34.75 or £22.50

    Payment by Paypal please.

    Example
    http://palantis.bravehost.com/storyshyeschool1.htm (2 chapters)

This whole story would be worth $15 or £9.66. Cute, exploration of character development.
"All the world will be your enemy, prince with a thousand enemies,
And whenever they catch you they will kill you.
But first they must catch you. Listener. Digger. Runner.
    Prince with a swift warn.
Be cunning, full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed."

    Work done so far:

Lost story Hunting with Locke (incomplete)

Soon after the plane crash, when Locke was still in his now-I-can-walk honeymoon and Sawyer kept busy stashing things away for himself, the pair crossed paths with a long-time inhabitant of the island.

Self-insert story requested by a Lost fan.
"All the world will be your enemy, prince with a thousand enemies,
And whenever they catch you they will kill you.
But first they must catch you. Listener. Digger. Runner.
    Prince with a swift warn.
Be cunning, full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed."

so to put this kind of into perspective about 5000 words is 10 pages of story. So, rough guessing would put that about $20 USD.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you come up with your price list?

5,000 words = ten pages? Perhaps you like your chapters short, but to me, 3,000 words is one chapter, so you'd be talking about around 1 1/2 chapters with 5k words.

I started off at the lower rate which was the same rate as another writer, and now I've added 10% to that, as the business was coming in thick and fast.

Who do you mean by 'they'? I'm guessing you mean the person who commissioned the story.

Well, I'm not omnipresent or anything, so there is the possibility somebody could buy a story from me and then sell it on without me knowing, but I do have partial right over a story so it might not necessarily be a good idea for someone to do that. Ultimately I'd probably need to rely on their honesty so that we could discuss sharing profit.

And the fact that I tend to ask permission, and then post, the stories I write. So there'd be online proof that the story originally belonged to me.

Yeah but you kinda have to tell them that first because to them what you're saying is that I'll write your whole story for what amount the total cost. you didn't say that you'd owned part of the money they make by selling it.

I have my doubts that anything I write would make a great deal of money. Firstly there's a lot of other authors out there and secondly, making good money out of writing only happens to a lucky few.

I'm doing the commissions to make a little bit of money now rather than investing in a big profit in the future. If it happens that someone else makes a profit out of a work commissioned to me then I'll deal with that when I get to it. But right now... I'm a student and I work part time and all I really want is a bit of extra money.

As for not saying that I own part of the rights to the story, I claim copyright on each story while giving credit to the commissioner for coming up with the character(s), if they did. Ideas (plots) generally can't be copyrighted, as far as I am aware. I'm no legal expert and I'm sure there are elements and complexities to the copyright stuff behind this that I've no idea of, but right now I'm just looking at the short term.
