    Avatar: The Last Airbender

    A fan novel by LupeFanboy8744

    Prologue

    Water. Earth. Fire. Air.

Long ago, there were four nations: the Water tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation and Air Nomads. In those nations, there were those able to manipulate, or bend, the nation’s respective element. At one time, the nations lived in harmony, aided by the avatar, the only being capable of bending all four of the elements. However, one hundred years ago, when the world needed him most, the avatar, at this time a firebender named Roku, vanished. Immediately following the avatar’s disappearance, the Fire Nation began a brutal war of conquest.

Because they knew that the new avatar would be born an Air Nomad, the Fire Nation, empowered by a great comet, committed the horrible genocide of that peaceful race. After that, they turned their attention to the Southern water tribe and Earth Kingdom. As far as the world’s people knew, peace and freedom was gone from the world. Many over the course of the one hundred years of the war desperately hoped for the return of the avatar, for only he could stop the ruthless tyrants of the Fire Nation from succeeding in their goals.

Now, the Fire Nation is very close to victory. Firelord Ozai, the Fire Nation’s current ruler, knows that the great comet is returning once again. When it arrives the next summer, he plans to use its power to finally bring down the Earth Kingdom, as his grandfather, Firelord Sozin, did when he destroyed the Air Nomads, and win the war, bringing the whole of the world under the rule of the Fire Nation.
However, the people’s hope is coming true.

The avatar is about to return.

    Chapter 1

“Rise and fight, Prince Zuko!” said the cruel voice of Firelord Ozai.

Thirteen-year old Prince Zuko stayed huddled to the ground. He did not want to fight his father. Yet, he was here now, being forced to pay for his mistake. The mistake in question was speaking out in his father’s war meeting against his plan to win a minor battle against an Earth Kingdom battalion. The plan was to sacrifice an entire force of novice troops, which included some of Zuko’s friends, in order to distract the Earth Kingdom soldiers. Zuko was enraged by this plan, calling it a betrayal of the troop’s patriotism. Ozai was furious with his son and demanded to him that he engage in an Agni kai, a traditional Fire Nation duel that was fought between two firebenders who had a quarrel. Zuko expected to fight the old general that he had insulted. However, in the arena, moments earlier, he had discovered that he was expected to fight Ozai. That was where his refusal had begun.

“I will not fight you!” Zuko stated.

The firelord was filled with nothing but disgust for his son. Meanwhile, in the crowd, Zuko’s cruel, sadistic, eleven-year old sister Azula giggled at the thought of her brother being punished. On the other hand, their uncle and Ozai’s older brother, Iroh, watched, hoping that Ozai wouldn’t resort to hurting his son.

“Rise! You will fight for your honor!” Ozai shouted.

Tears began to pour from Zuko’s eyes, much to the disgust of Ozai, Azula and most of the crowd. Zuko looked up pathetically at Ozai. His father was a terrifying man. Long black hair draped down to his shoulders, giving him a similarity to a maned predatory feline. A length of black beard extended from his chin to just the end of his neck. His amber eyes blazed with hate. Shirtless, as was custom for males fighting an Agni kai, his rock-hard muscles were visible.

“Please…I am your loyal son…I only had the Fire Nation’s best interest in mind…” Zuko said, lifting himself from the floor a bit and moving to a kneeling position.

Ozai closed the gap between the two of them and used his firebending to ignite his clenched fist in fire.

“You will learn respect, and suffering will be your teacher!” he stated.

Ozai then struck Zuko hard over his right eye, the fire severely burning his skin. Zuko screamed in pain, Iroh turned away in horror and Azula laughed gleefully. When he was finished, Ozai glared at Zuko.

“Get up and go. Because you have shamed your nation. You are hereby banished from the Fire Nation unless you return with the avatar. Now, be gone!” he said, walking away.

Zuko looked up. The burn was horrible and would become a permanent scar that he would carry until the day he died. As the arena cleared, Iroh came to comfort his nephew.

“I will go with you,” he said, taking Zuko to tend to the burn.

    Zuko looked up in anger.

“I will find the avatar! I will restore my honor!” he exclaimed.

It was a fool’s errand, for, of course, the avatar had vanished a century ago. Iroh saw this for what it was: a convenient way of getting rid of Zuko. Three years of searching began today.

Not quite up there with M Night Shyamalan's masterpiece, but you're doing pretty good.
Ask not what Ken Penders can do for you, but what you can do for Ken Penders.

This is based upon the original show, not the movie, but thank you regardless.
