Glad they're finally listening to fans. I'm not really a gamer, so I can't offer many thoughts on that front, but the animation on Sonic on the title screen at the end looks great.
Ask not what Ken Penders can do for you, but what you can do for Ken Penders.
Notice the Sonic Team logo is very conspicuously absent - essentially it's a fan spinoff/remake with the official stamp from Sega, which is perfectly fine by me. We'll wait and see what the mainline Sonic game is, but in the meantime I predict this will still be the game I'm actually hanging out for.
Christian Whitehead deserves mention as he's one of the guys that ported Sonic 2 and Sonic CD to Android and iOS - and they weren't just the original ROMs running in an emulator, they were full-on, ground-up rewrites that led to uncapped frame rates, restored cut content and some new stuff, all whilst being pretty much 100% on-point to the physics and mechanics of the original games. That's a pretty amazing technical feat for just two people - I assume the same engine's being used for this one.

Sonic Mania looks awesome! I have absolutely nothing to complain about whatsoever.
The physics look spot-on, the level design is designed with Sonic's speed and physics in mind while remaining interesting to explore, the elemental shields are back, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are playable, and, best of all, the game looks fun!
Sonic 2017 (the Modern Sonic game) looks interesting with its darker tone, return of Classic Sonic, and the "join the resistance" tagline. It's very intriguing that Sonic 2017 was announced over a year before its anticipated date of release. This is looking like a very big game with a much more in-depth story than what we got with Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations. I really like this game's tone. It's not quite Shadow the Hedgehog or Sonic 2006 levels of dark (due to the slightly cartoonish nature of Modern and Classic Sonic's animations), but it's dark enough to be a welcome change in tone.
However, due to the lack of gameplay in the teaser, I can't say anything else about Sonic 2017. I'm just going to have to wait and see.

I feel it's rather questionable to place so much faith in such precarious pursuits as a new...

...game under the SEGA brand, although your remarks on Sonic Mania are quite felicitous! Your name doesn't have to be Sir Grecion G. Gleason or Queen Peter P. Palliser to know that simply being released by Sega rather than being produced by Sega bodes in Sonic Mania's (surely orgasmic) favor with oh so much fervor! The Sonic brand under the Sega band of bland, alas, seems quite inexorable at this point, dear friends, dear hens, dear pens, and dear pen pals. A single tear runs down one's cheek. Their last true masterpiece materialized on the cusp of the ''fin-de-siècle'' as French fags wearing gags and hags in drag say each day before they sit down to pray. So yes my brethren, my conclusion, (be it oh so true son,) is such that their recent run of games have proven quite stultifying. Soon it seems, Sonic fandom might as well be antediluvian for all the relevance it shall have! Cuts himself and cries in a corner.

Oh dear! It seems as though... well, mm, I regret to inform you that I've actually mimeographed TWO (that's right, count 'em, two) sections of your digital epistle, despite the fact I don't even own a mimeograph! Oh gracious me, dear me, heavens to Betsy and gracious no, and heavens no and gracious heaven dear Betsy no! I say sir, oh I say, I say sir, I sir, sir moderator sir, are there certain strictures on the set amount of quotes one may er... um... I say, well, quote in a given p-p-p-post, or are these strictures banished in lieu of structures? And while we're on the topic, can you IN FACT, get me a GODDAMN appointment with dentists who employ...
